Reading #3 Paul Revere's Engravings

Part I; Engravings

1. Examine both engravings and make a list of the differences.
2. Why do you think Revere made these changes?
3. Based only on what you see in Revere's engraving, write an explanation as to what happened that       night in Boston.

Part II; Trial Testimony:

1. Samuel Hemmingway (colonist):
  • How did Patrick Carr compare the soldiers in Boston to the one's he'd seen in Ireland?
  • Did Patrick Carr blame the soldiers that killed him?
2. Matthew Adams (colonist):
  • According to Adams, who started the violence? How?
3. Preston (British soldier):
  • According to Preston's deposition, was this a massacre and was he guilty of murder?  Why or   why not?

Testimony (official statement in court) of Samuel Hemmingway for the Crown
Question:  Was you Patrick Carr's surgeon?

Answer:  I was...
Question:  Did he [Carr] understand he was in danger?
AnswerHe told me...he was a native of Ireland, that he had frequently seen mobs, and soldiers called upon to quiet them...he had seen soldiers often fire on the people in Ireland, but had never seen them bear half as much before they fired in his life...
QuestionWhen had you the last conversation with him?
AnswerAbout four o'clock in the afternoon, preceding the night on which he died, and he then particularly said, he forgave the man whoever he was that shot him, he was satisfied he had no malice (evil intentions), but fired to defend himself.

From the deposition (sworn testimony as evidence) of Matthew Adams
"They stood with their pieces (guns) before them, to defend themselves; and as soon as they had arranged themselves, a party, about twelve in number, with sticks in their hands, who stood in the middle of the street, gave three cheers, and immediately surrounded the soldiers, and struck upon their guns with their sticks, and passed along the front of the soldiers, toward Royal-Exchange-lane, striking the soldiers' guns as they passed...I saw the people near me on the left, strike the soldiers' guns, daring them to fire, and called them cowardly rascals, for bringing arms (guns) against naked (unarmed) men...."

In Preston's deposition, he offered the following account of the actual shooting:
Some well behaved people asked me if the guns were charged (ready to fire). I replied yes. They then asked me if I intended to order the men to fire. I answered no, by no means, pointing out to them that I was in front of the muzzles of the men's pieces (guns), and would die if they fired; that the soldiers were ready to fire and had their bayonets ready, and my giving the word fire under those circumstances would prove me to be no officer. While I was speaking, one of the soldiers having received a severe blow with a stick, stepped a little on one side and instantly fired, on which turning to and asking him why he fired without orders, I was struck with a club on my arm, which I couldn’t use for some time, which if the blow had been on my head, most probably would have destroyed me. Because of this a general attack was made on the men by a great number of heavy clubs and snowballs being thrown at them, by which all our lives were in imminent danger, some people at the same time were calling out, damn your bloods-why don't you fire. Instantly three or four of the soldiers fired, one after another, and directly after three more in the same confusion.

Part III; Paragraph:
  • Write an AXEXES paragraph explaining why Revere's engraving is touted as the most effective piece of war propaganda in American history.
